VP for Diversity, Equity, Compliance & Inclusion

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. A senior college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system, John Jay is a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI) that has been ranked third in the nation in Black student success and as a top 10 institution for promoting student social mobility. John Jay is proud to serve a diverse student body of 15,000 students that includes nearly 50 percent of students who are first in their family to attend college, as well as students who are immigrants, from low-income families, or from other historically underrepresented groups.

Under the dynamic leadership of President Karol V. Mason, John Jay is focused on the success of all its students, so they can become fierce advocates for justice in their communities and around the world. Reporting to the President, the inaugural Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Compliance & Inclusion will be a member of the President’s Senior Leadership Team and Council. S/he will bring experienced and collaborative leadership, as well as a strategic vision to the College-wide work of building an inclusive and equitable community. The new Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Compliance & Inclusion will oversee and manage compliance and accountability functions, alongside training, education, and prevention programming, and provide expert advice and thought leadership in these areas.

As a visible champion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and compliance, s/he will establish and nurture partnerships with faculty, staff, and students of the John Jay community to develop a strategic vision that builds a strong culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging at the College. S/he creates, implements, and continually assesses the College’s plans, needs, and results related to equity, inclusion, compliance, and retention. The vice president serves as an expert advisor and thought leader in these areas for the John Jay community, and provides training and prevention resources for the College.
The successful candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of theory and practice with regard to leadership in diversity, human development, training, and change management; experience implementing, investigating, or enforcing policies or law; a proven track record in managing change; and experience as an organizational leader either in a higher education setting or in a large governmental or non-profit organization.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, demonstrate cultural awareness, exercise emotional intelligence, and possess the ability to build trust and credibility, in order to effectively collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders and articulate the importance of equity and inclusion to the broader educational mission of John Jay and CUNY. The preferred candidate should have an earned doctorate, juris doctor, or equivalent terminal degree, and at least 5 years of successful and progressive experience in a leadership and supervisory role directly related to diversity, inclusion, and equity, as well as a passion to work proactively, collaboratively and creatively as part of a high-level administrative team.
