Human Resources Redesign at Virginia Commonwealth University
In 2015, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) began working on an organizational redesign called The Great Place Initiative. The Great Place HR Redesign created a new class of employees for former classified staff and many non-teaching faculty members. This resulted in redesigned positions that provide greater career mobility. Also as a part of the redesign, the compensation system was changed to a market data-based structure, a new performance management system was implemented, and career development communities were created to allow employees to explore job opportunities in other areas on campus. As a part of The Great Place HR Redesign, the role of HR employees, both in central HR and in the campus divisions, was revised and expanded. In this session, there will be a specific focus on how the HR community at VCU was impacted and engaged. We will examine successes of the project, as well as challenges and room for growth.
