Tapping Into Local Talent: Drexel University's Commitment to Hiring West Philadelphians

In 2010, John Fry became the president of Drexel University and set an ambitious goal: make the university the most civically engaged institution in the nation. As part of the institution’s transformation, a comprehensive strategy to create economic opportunities for West Philadelphians has been developed with a particular focus on hiring. Drexel University is positioned in West Philadelphia where the poverty level is double the city’s already staggering average. Despite the struggles faced by many residents, there is great talent present. Drexel has developed programs that leverage this talent to create mutual benefits and ultimately, a better West Philadelphia. In this session, we will analyze a customized training program that was established to address problematic high turnover in Drexel’s medical practices. Come learn how this program has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in wages and drastically reduced turnover while creating career paths for residents.
