How to Create a Welcoming Campus: People, Processes and Possibilities
Our institutions serve diverse stakeholders, yet often our structures, processes and environments lack a welcoming and user-friendly focus. This harms our ability to educate students, engage talent and meet community needs. As a result, Indiana University–Purdue University of Indianapolis launched the Welcoming Campus Initiative in 2016 as a campus-wide intervention that encouraged colleagues to create and sustain a campus environment that better meets the diverse needs of students, faculty, staff, community members and guests. This session will present a case study of how IUPUI is changing its culture to become a more welcoming campus, with a particular focus on planning, stakeholder engagement, and crosscutting grassroots implementation projects. Attendees will learn how effective leadership; change management processes and approaches; HR roles and responsibilities; and specific resources, strategies and outcomes can make their institutions more welcoming and inclusive places to learn, work and serve our communities.
